Odessa's Place is a 501C3 nonprofit committed to Evangelistic Outreach with a particular focus on youth development. Founders of the Odessa Place believe that building and maintaining a safe, strong, and vibrant community begins and ends with investing time and resources in at risk young people that go to school, play, and interact with other youth and adults not encumbered by the same risks.
Located at 628 W 18th St, Erie, PA 16502 Odessa’s Place is home to the “We Beat the Streets Youth Program” which engages youth in the 2nd grade through the 5th grade with a purpose to provide a SAFE HAVEN and learning opportunities.
The program offers year-round services. During the school year, an afterschool program is offered and during the summer months the program opens its doors for youth to come and participate interactively in reading, writing, arts and crafts, learning “kid friendly math”, and educational games. The youth will also learn character building skills intended to improve behavioral outcomes.
Participating youth learn from the “We Beat the Streets” handbook where they are challenged to participate in a reading program based on the book and provide a report on what they learn. In addition to the instruction gained from the “We Beat the Streets” reading, students receive other books that remain part of the Odessa place library until the end of the year when students are able to take books home.
Because many of the participating students come from deprived and disadvantaged households in Census tracts 9, 10, 12, 13, 18,Odessa’s Place provides school supplies, books, and after school snacks as part of the program. To further incentivize the students as well as provid educational enhancement, each will go on a local field trip provided their participation and behavior is acceptable. After school tutoring is also offered for students who sign up.
